As AI Enters Classrooms, Why is Sweden Returning to Paper?

While reading recent news about the education world, I encountered two different scenes that perfectly summarize the paradox of our current era.

On one hand, schools where artificial intelligence is integrated into classrooms as a "teacher" or "personal assistant," sparking conversations about futuristic revolutions in education... On the other hand, Sweden, one of the pioneers of digitalization in education, allocating millions of dollars to remove screens from schools and bring back printed books, paper, and pencils.

As a teacher, when I put these two scenes side by side, what I felt wasn't surprise, but a profound realization. Because this situation actually points to the exact "balance" point we have been searching for in education for years.

๐Ÿš€ AI: Speed and Overcoming Boundaries We cannot deny the potential of AI in education. Algorithms that can instantly adapt to a student's learning pace, the ability to access information in seconds, and personalized learning experiences are wonderful tools. AI shows us "how to overcome boundaries." However, when we focus so much on speed, what are we missing out on?

๐Ÿ“š Why Did Sweden Decide to go "Back to Basics"? The main reason behind Sweden's radical reversal was a noticeable decline observed in international reading comprehension exams and basic skills tests. The government, which saw digitalization as a savior in recent years, is now implementing a "back-to-basics" policy in educational materials.

With the new practices on the agenda:

โ€ข There is a rapid shift away from screen-based learning in schools.

โ€ข Especially in preschool and early elementary grades, renewed emphasis is placed on basic reading and handwriting skills.

โ€ข The government is transferring millions of dollars in print material budgets to schools to ensure every student has access to physical textbooks.

The reality realized by Swedish officials and educators is very clear: Although digital screens support rapid information consumption, they cannot replace physical books and paper when it comes to children's deep focus, reading texts patiently, and developing motor skills (handwriting).

The classroom of the future will not consist solely of screens or solely of paper. However, this experience of Sweden reminds us very clearly that we should not ignore the most basic cognitive needs of human beings while being captivated by the magic of technology.

It is a fact that the people who create artificial intelligence today were also educated with the classic methods that Sweden is trying to return to.
