Return to Mandatory Remote Work: We’re Not Fleeing a Virus, but an Energy Crisis ⚡️⚠️🚨

Return to Mandatory Remote Work: We’re Not Fleeing a Virus, but an Energy Crisis ⚡️⚠️🚨

During the pandemic, we emptied our offices for the sake of health. Today, amidst a deepening geopolitical landscape and an escalating oil crisis, we are preparing to do the same. This time, however, we aren't isolating people, but energy and budgets. The mandatory remote work model is making a comeback as a macroeconomic "emergency brake."

Warning signals from Asia: • Philippines and Sri Lanka: Transitioning to a four-day workweek. • Vietnam: Returning to mandatory remote work. • Bangladesh: Planned power outages and remote learning.

The domino effect in Europe is at the door It is only a matter of time before this forced savings trend spreads to Europe, a region highly sensitive to energy bottlenecks. The climate control bills of massive office buildings and the fuel costs of daily commutes are becoming unsustainable. The remote work infrastructure from 2020 is already in place; now, we just need to flip the switch.

The "new" work crisis: Who pays the bill? During the pandemic, remote work was a protective shield; today, it is a cost transfer. As companies save on energy expenses, the burden shifts to the employees' home utility bills. Simultaneously, the gap between those working from home and frontline workers struggling with high fuel costs in the field is growing dangerously wide.

This new energy shock is creating a powerful disruption in our work culture. Balancing energy costs with the employee experience will be the greatest leadership test of the upcoming era.

Have you already made your contingency plans?
